Beginning with three songs that just didn't fit into a Matt Bianco project ("From Now On," "Run for Cover," "How Dare You"), Basia and Danny began their first album together in 1986. While it was well-publicized in England, the album never caught on there and it had a slow start across the continent. Just when it seemed doomed to obscurity, the French and Japanese caught hold of it, making it a huge sensation in both countries. Time and Tide was initially not considered for US release, the very idea scoffed at by record execs who deemed the album "too European." Nevertheless the music won out when DJs in California began to add it to playlists for the fledgling New Adult Contemporary format. Word of mouth and radio popularity finally led Epic to release it in the US in 1988. The title track crossed over to the top 40 pop chart and a tour was launched for audiences all over the world.
Trivia:
- "New Day for You" lyrics were from a letter that Peter Ross wrote to Basia on her birthday.
- Astrud Gilberto became aware of the song dedicated to her, and she and Basia met in London in 1988.
- "Run For Cover," the very first Basia single, was originally called "Undercover" and had a crime/spy theme. It was intended for Matt Bianco in the beginning.
- There are many covers for this album: UK, US, Dutch/French, two Japanese covers, and an Australian cover as well! Track listings also vary, many include bonus tracks "Forgive and Forget" and "Give Me That," though not all countries included both. The US included neither, and they were only released on the Brave New Hope EP several years later. Confused yet?
- Basia's neighbors really were named Geoff and Jill. They are thanked in the credits.
